The Stourc city guide · 04

Where ideas become things.

Eindhoven has a different energy from the historic Dutch cities. Former factories have become creative districts, design is part of the city's identity, and a strong technology sector brings people from across the world to study and work here.

It isn't just offices, laboratories and innovation. There are independent cafés, green spaces, music venues, neighbourhood restaurants and an international community to discover.

Get to know the city

Find the neighbourhood that fits you.

These are starting points, not rigid labels. Visit in person if you can; the feel of a street can change from one block to the next.

Strijp-S

A former Philips industrial site transformed into a creative district with food, design, events and striking industrial architecture. Check what's happening when you visit.

De Bergen

A compact area near the centre with smaller streets, cafés, restaurants and boutiques. Good for a slower wander and an evening out.

Strijp-R

A design-led area with industrial heritage and creative businesses. It has a different pace from the main centre and rewards checking opening times ahead.

City centre

Convenient for shops, cafés, transport and everyday essentials. Explore beyond the main shopping streets to find independent places.

TU/e and university area

A useful anchor for students and researchers, with campus facilities and connections to the wider technology community.

Genneper Parken

Green space, walking and cycling routes and room to get away from the urban centre. A good reminder that Eindhoven is more than its tech reputation.

Spend your time well

Culture, food and places to explore.

Use these ideas as a starting point and check official venue pages for opening hours, ticketing and current programmes.

Dutch Design Week

Usually held in October, this city-wide design event brings exhibitions, installations, talks and experimental ideas to venues across Eindhoven. Check the official programme for current dates, tickets and locations.

Museums and creative spaces

The Van Abbemuseum focuses on modern and contemporary art; the Philips Museum explores the company's local history. Check official sites for current exhibitions and opening times.

Technology and innovation

Look for public lectures, exhibitions, meet-ups and events around the city's technology and research communities. If you're moving for work or study, these can be useful ways to meet people who share your interests.

Food and drink

Explore cafés, independent restaurants and international food spots around the centre and creative districts. Strijp-S is a useful starting point if you like converted industrial spaces and contemporary venues.

Get outdoors

Explore Genneper Parken and local cycling routes, or head towards parks and green areas around the city. The surrounding Brabant region offers more options for a longer ride or walk.

Make connections

How to start building a social life.

Friendships usually grow through repeated, low-pressure contact. Pick something you enjoy and show up more than once.

  • University and international communities. If you're studying or researching, check your institution's introduction programme, student associations and international support teams.
  • Design and tech events. Talks, exhibitions, meet-ups and professional communities can help you meet people beyond your workplace. Check dates and registration requirements before going.
  • Build a routine. Choose a weekly activity, sports club, language exchange or favourite café. Recurring settings make it easier to recognise people and build connections over time.

A first day idea

A relaxed way to explore.

This is a flexible outline, not a checklist to rush through. Choose one area and leave room for unexpected discoveries.

Morning

Start with coffee in the centre, then explore the streets around De Bergen.

Afternoon

Spend time at Strijp-S and check whether there are exhibitions, markets or other events on. If you prefer green space, choose Genneper Parken instead.

Evening

Find a restaurant or live event from current local listings. During Dutch Design Week, plan ahead because venues and events are spread across the city.

The practical side

Before and after you arrive.

Administrative rules and services can change. Confirm requirements directly with official sources for your specific circumstances.

Housing

Demand can be high around universities and major employers. Start early, verify listings and agreements, and ask your institution or employer about legitimate accommodation resources.

Registration and BSN

Check Eindhoven Municipality's current guidance on registering your address and obtaining a BSN. Requirements and appointment processes depend on your situation.

Getting around

Eindhoven is well suited to cycling and has bus connections across the city. Check current local transport information and plan rail journeys with NS.

Weather and clothing

The weather changes quickly, so a waterproof layer and lights for cycling are useful. If you cycle regularly, budget for a secure lock and basic maintenance.

Useful official links

Start with reliable sources.

For registration, public transport, tickets and local services, official websites are the best place to confirm current information.
